CSV Delimiter Converter mini guide
Convert semicolon CSV to comma, tab or pipe separators while preserving quoted delimiters, escaped quotes and multiline cells.
How to use CSV Delimiter Converter
- 1Paste delimited text or Load sample to try semicolon-separated input.
- 2Choose Input delimiter or Auto-detect, then choose Output delimiter.
- 3Select Convert and review the rewritten CSV before copying or downloading it.
What it is good for
- • Rewrite semicolon exports as comma-separated CSV.
- • Keep quoted separators and multiline values intact.
- • Prepare tab-delimited records for another importer.
Example
Input
name;note Alice;"Hello; world"
Output
name,note Alice,Hello; world
Rules and limitations
The input is parsed as complete CSV records before it is rewritten. A separator inside a quoted field stays inside that field, and quoted multiline fields retain their line breaks. Replacing every semicolon with a comma would corrupt such data; parsing prevents that.
Output is re-quoted only where necessary for the selected separator, double quotes or line breaks. Original quoting style and line-ending style may change, but cell values remain unchanged. A UTF-8 byte-order mark at the beginning is removed.
The converter handles comma, semicolon, tab and pipe input and output. It does not infer data types, require headers or reinterpret formulas. Auto-detect uses a consistency heuristic; choose the delimiter explicitly for a one-column file or ambiguous content.
Common problems
Unclosed quotes and unexpected quote characters are errors. Quote whole fields and use two quotes for an embedded quote.
Ragged records are preserved because some delimiter conversion tasks do not represent tables. Validate row widths separately before converting to JSON or SQL.
Frequently asked questions
Does it preserve quoted separators?
Yes. Quoted commas and semicolons remain part of their original cell values.
Are multiline cells supported?
Yes. Quoted line breaks are parsed and re-serialized.
Does it need a header row?
No. It rewrites records without assigning column names.
Can it change semicolons into commas?
Yes. Choose semicolon input and comma output, then Convert.
Is my input uploaded or saved?
This tool processes input in your browser and does not save its input or output to local storage. Copy and download are user actions. The site uses analytics for page and action metadata and may use ads and production error reporting; see the Privacy Policy for those services.
